Self-Evaluation Speech Critique
Self-Evaluation Speech Critique
When I first changed my major from Exercise Science to Mass Communication, I recall being anxious about having to take Advanced Public Speaking. I had taken Basic Public Speaking online, but that only required me to film myself speaking and post it. The last in-person speech class I took was in high school, so it had been awhile since I had actually had to speak in front of my classmates. Because of that somewhat "limited" experience, I was very uncertain of my speaking skills as I entered this course. However, throughout this semester, I found myself becoming more and more confident in my speaking skills, more comfortable behind the podium, and more structured in my delivery. Each speech I gave pushed me out of my comfort zone, and by the end of this course, the progress I had made was evident.
One of my biggest concerns when I decided to take this course was my social anxiety. I knew it would more than likely have an affect on my performance and speeches. Coming to college definitely forced me out of my shell, but I still had issues with speaking in front of an audience. The idea of standing in front of a room full of people and speaking used to make me freeze up, become anxious, and make my voice shake. However, after this semester, I feel very different about public speaking. Speech by speech, I began to feel more confident and less nervous. Facing this fear made me realize that gaining confidence in myself was possible.
Over the course of the class, I improved in several aspects of public speaking. At the beginning, I would fill a long pause with "like, um, uhh, etc." This would throw me off completely. As time went on, and the more I practiced, I was able to eliminate this habit for the most part. I feel like it definitely improved each speech. The biggest improvement that I think that I made was my confidence. I was extremely nervous at the beginning of the semester. But, after getting to know my classmates and realizing that there weren't really that many people watching me, I became more and more confident behind the podium. I didn't stutter or fidget with my notes while I stood. I stood tall, used my hands, and maintained eye-contact with my audience. This helped me deliver my message more clearly and effectively.
Looking back, I am very proud of my growth that I made each speech. There were still some nerves, but I came up with a plan to manage them and communicate more effectively. Taking this course not only improved my speaking skills, but showed me that working through uncomfortable things can help me grow. I am leaving this class with a sense of confidence that I did not have before, as well as a sense of accomplishment.
